The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) provides civic engineering services to strengthen national security, energize the economy, and reduce risks from disasters.

adaptable brand frameworks
Responsible for the development and maintenance of navigable inland and coastal waterways, ports, and harbors throughout the US. Researchers and scientists collect, store, visualize, analyze, and distribute huge amounts of navigation-related data across six operational categories. Their work is integral to sustaining national safety and market commerce; serves government agencies as well as private sector and civic research institutions.
The myriad of data sets, web services, and information streams that are presently used by the Corps are disparate and therefore do not provide an efficient way for decision makers and practitioners to do their jobs. An Integrated Navigation Analysis and Visualization (INAV) Portal was needed to seamlessly combine all of the aforementioned data sets and live feeds into a single, leap-ahead capability for Corps practitioners to use to make better, faster, cheaper, repeatable decisions that ensure a safe, reliable, and efficient MTS.
"Data only matters when it can be trusted, shared, and acted on. Our work turned scattered navigation records into a single source of truth for decision-makers"
Amani Anai
Lead Information Architect
The NavPortal represented over 10 desktop and online tools that enabled the import, export, analysis, visualization and sharing of data and research. These tools and their internal documentation were further audited to for a deeper analysis of core workflows, existing UI patterns, edge cases, and the continuous discovery.
